As BBVA’s Future Designers VI collective, we were invited to participate in the 2024 Mayrit Biennale, as part of a speculative design expo dealing with the future of relationships.

Taking a Futures Design approach, we conducted an in-depth Trend Research & Analysis,  later extrapolating our findings into a Future Scenario where other non-human entities begin to socially integrate themselves into our lives.

This scenario was then materialized into an immersive experience where visitors explore a shared space with nature, enabling a dialogue between both where mutual consent defines all interaction.

//The Methodology

We gathered and analyzed more than 150 signs of change, from which we defined a series of macro-trends that pointed at a shared longing for connection (stemming from the loneliness epidemic), and a consequent effort to communicate and establish “relationships” with other non-human entities.

In this podcast episode, Joel Blanco (Mayrit Curatorial Director) and I, discuss our proposed Future scenario, as well as other trends and societal changes defining the future of our relationships.

//The Result

Commanding space tightly filled with plants, where, through the use of sensors, visitors’ actions trigger a series of light and sound reactions, simulating a conversation between human and plant.

Additionally, a set of “Rules of consent”, are repeatedly announced over speakers, allowing nature to ultimately guide human movement within the space.

“Remember, this is a space of mutual respect and dialogue between equals.

We appreciate your collaboration.”
